Chapter 5

Mia

I woke to a foggy haze in my mind and my body tangled between sheets so soft they might have been spun from clouds. Still clothed in my fake cheerleading outfit, I looked down and then around the room. The air was thick with the pungent aroma of musk and cinnamon, stifling me like a wave of forgotten memories.

My gaze was drawn to the dead set of eyes on the wall - the hollow eyes of a deer skull staring back at me; taunting me with its silent judgment. With every breath, my lungs burned from the dryness that seemed to swallow me whole. Swallowing hard, I forced myself to move, pushing away from the bed until my feet touched the ground.

The warm wood sent a wave of heat through my body once my feet touched the smooth surface. The room was big, with a large brown Chester on the wall across from me. I stepped lightly and softly, trying to avoid the floor’s groans as I hushed across the enormous room. The floor was one smooth expanse of cherry wood, but the air from outside trickling in gave it a cool quality that made me shudder.

I let the pass of my fingers roam over the leather chair in front of me, paying close attention to the hunting magazines laying on the arm of the chair. I was never the nosey type. My mother said that was a bad habit to have and that keeping my mouth shut and my head down was always the best course of action, but still I found my hands pulling open the drawers. A row of soft sweaters greeted me, and I padded through them. Lifting each one as I smelled the masculine scent that lingered on them.

The scent was strong, giving off an aroma of safety and security. I placed them back, only hesitating for a moment as I contemplated putting one on. I found the drawer below it and slid it open, and my breath hitched. Rows of guns and knives lined the drawer from one side to the other. A black leather bound journal piqued my interest, but before I could flip it open, a deep-seated rumble make my spine straighten.

I slammed the drawer shut and turned around. “I’m sorry, I was just—”

“You don’t have to apologize. It’s a natural human instinct. Snooping.”

“Well, I mean, I wouldn’t say I was snooping…” I let my words die and pulled my bottom lip between my teeth.”

His lips curled at the corner, and a sinister smile spread across them. “No?” He looked past me, and then his eyes found me again. “What would you call it?”

My words jumbled on the tip of my tongue, and I swallowed. “Searching….”

“For?”

I pulled at my now wild tresses before folding my arms across my chest. “My phone and stuff.”

“Hungry?”

His question caught me off guard, and I scanned the room. Everything my mother told me not to do, I was doing. Getting into strangers’s car, eating weird candy and now waking up in a bed that didn’t belong to me in a house I had no business being in.
